Week One Power Rankings

After taking the year off last season, the Power Rankings are back for 2010. Since I did my season predictions article, I figured you could deduce the rankings from what you saw. If not, too bad, I had a lot to do last week, and my wife needed me to finish the "Honey-Do" list before the season started.

Obviously, I was surprised by some of performances I saw this weekend. New England, Houston, Seattle, and Kansas City looked much better than I thought they would. The first two make me think that my playoff predictions may be right on. The latter, their fans should be happy that they look to be on the right track. On the other hand, Dallas, San Diego, and San Francisco made me wonder what it was I saw in them in the first place. In particular, I think the Cowboys and 49ers have some serious issues that need to be addressed.

Overall though, it is only one week, and something tells me this won't be the last time I change the rankings.

As always, feel free to drop me a line if you have any questions or comments by clicking on the "Ask the Doc" link above.

New Orleans

-0

I know that I have the Packers winning this year's Super Bowl, but nobody replaces the champs until they lose.
Green Bay 1-0 The offense looked very sluggish. However, major props to the defense for handling the curveball that was Mike Vick.
Baltimore 1-0 In what was a grudge match (notice I didn't use the word "classic"), Ray Lewis and company beat the Jets down, literally and figuratively.
New England 1-0 The Patriots...well, they were the Patriots. The blew out the Bengals and didn't let up until the game was well out of reach.
Minnesota 0-1 Minnesota was a tough placement. They didn't look sharp for a game that was supposed to be about "revenge."
Houston 1-0 In my opinion, the best performance of the weekend. They controlled both lines of scrimmage, and finally "finished."
Indianapolis 0-1 As long as they have Peyton, they'll be a playoff team, but watching the lines get caved in like that was sobering.
Pittsburgh 1-0 If Dennis Dixon can hand Big Ben a 2-2 or 3-1 team, the race for first in the AFC North will be tighter than most expected.
Tennessee 1-0 Vince Young looked impressive and played a disciplined game against the Raiders. Let's see if he can do it against Pittsburgh.
Dallas 0-1 After that awful showing on Sunday night, Dallas needs to stop worrying about the Super Bowl and focus on winning a game.
San Diego 0-1 I swear I say this every year...the Chargers are one of the most talented teams in the league. So, why can't they put it together?
New York Jets 0-1 Here's another team that should stop thinking about the Super Bowl, especially their coach. Just try to get to the end zone...once!
New York Giants 1-0 Overall, the Giants looked very good. Offensively and defensively, they controlled a pretty bad team. Is that what they call a backhanded compliment?
Atlanta 0-1 Playing in Pittsburgh is never easy, especially for the opening game. I give Atlanta a pass on this one, but they need to get the offense going.
Cincinnati 0-1 As you could see from my Season Predictions, I wasn't as high as most on Cincy, and now I know why.
Philadelphia 0-1 Consider the hornets nest officially split open. If that's the case, I would hate to be Andy Reid trying to explain to Mike Vick why he's not starting next week.
San Francisco 0-1 Yes, I still think this team will win the NFC West. They're young and Mike Singletary will use this game to get them refocused.
Miami 1-0 Wow, that was one uninspiring performance about the worst team in football, Coach Sporano. You're lucky Bill Parcells wasn't around for that.
Kansas City 1-0 Speed, speed, speed. You could tell on Monday night that's what the Chiefs' front office has been thinking.
Washington 1-0 Sorry, Skins' fans, your boys get no credit for that one. Dallas is dysfunctional and you barely did enough to win the ugliest game of the weekend.
Seattle 1-0 Sure, the 49ers helped them out with dumb mistakes, but they capitalized on them and won big. Playing at Denver this week will tell us is they're too low.
Jacksonville 1-0 If they get that kind of production regularly from David Garrard, they could surprise some people. But, I highly doubt they will.
Oakland 0-1 OK Al, I put my name out there, tell people your team is going to be much-improved, and then you go out and lay that egg???
Denver 0-1 I'll say it right now, the injuries and Kyle Orton will lead this team to a 5-11 record. For that reason, I'd get Tebow ready.
Carolina 0-1 John Fox will wonder, if he isn't already, what he did in a previous life to deserve the bad quarterback play he's going to see in his final season in Carolina.
Arizona 1-0 This is another team that doesn't get much credit for a win. Guys, you almost got beat by a rookie quarterback....FOR THE RAMS!
Detroit 0-1 I've now seen the play about 500 times, and I feel for the Lions organization and fans. Take comfort, you won that game and better things are on the horizon.
Chicago 1-0 Which is more than can be said for the Bears. Somehow, they only gave up 168 yards, gained 463, and barely won 19-14? Polish up that resume, Lovie.
Tampa Bay 1-0 No matter how many times he gets hurt, or how severe, Cadillac Williams always perseveres. He's one of the best stories in the NFL.
Cleveland 0-1 OK, let me get this straight. Mike Holmgren is one of the best quarterback coaches/evaluators of all time, yet he thought Jake Delhomme was the answer?
St. Louis 0-1 Sam Bradford threw the ball 55 times while getting knocked around by the Cards. Coach Spagnuolo, you may want to run the ball before you get the franchise killed.
Buffalo 0-1 Well fellas, only 15 more to go before you make me the best prognosticator of all time. Keep up the bad work.
