2008 Week Five Power Rankings

There wasn't any movement in the top and bottom four of the rankings this week, but plenty in between. Fortunately for yours truly, Houston blowing a 17 point lead against the Colts in the final 4:04 kept the Doc from almost having to start over from scratch (sorry Texans' fans, I know it's still a pretty fresh wound).

1   New York Giants (4-0) They've outscored their opponents 127-49. With Cleveland and San Francisco next, there's no reason to think they won't be 6-0 when they face Pittsburgh.
2   Dallas (4-1) Sometimes, even really good teams have to win ugly against lesser opponents. Another game like that though and they'll fall in the rankings.
3   Pittsburgh (4-1) No matter how banged up they are, Mike Tomlin is figuring out ways to win against good teams.
4   Tennessee (5-0) The Titans got a gift in Baltimore with that terrible roughing the passer call, but they get credit for taking advantage of it.
5   Washington (4-1) The old cliche is that turnover margin is what differentiates good teams from bad. Five games in and the 'Skins have yet to give the ball away.
6   Denver (4-1) Their last three wins have come by a combined total of six points. I don't know if that means anything, but I think it's worth mentioning.
7   Carolina (4-1) With DeAngelo Williams and Jonathan Stewart in the backfield, the Panthers' running game looks to be pretty solid for the coming years.
8   New England (3-1) So much for Matt Cassel not being able to throw deep, huh?
9   Philadelphia (2-3) Another tough loss to a division opponent. Forget right now, the NFC East may be the best division from top-to-bottom all time.
10   Indianapolis (2-2) Even though it was fluky, that might be the game that turns the season around for Tony Dungy's crew.
11   San Diego (2-3) I'm really, really losing patience with this team.
12   Buffalo (4-1) With Trent Edwards concussion and accompanying uncertain status, the bye week couldn't come at a better time.
13

Jacksonville (2-3) Their front seven has been pushed around the last two games. Not a good sign for a team that was a Super Bowl favorite.
14   Tampa Bay (3-2) You don't move down when you barely lose in the "Mile High" air, hold the explosive Broncos to 16 points, and do it with your backup quarterback.
15   Chicago (3-2) After their dominating performance against the Lions, could they be the best team in the NFC North?
16   Minnesota (2-3) Or will the Vikings' Monday night win against the Saints finally get this team going?
17   Baltimore (2-2) The good - their next five games are against teams that are 6-14. The bad - five of their last seven are against teams in the top ten of the rankings.
18   New Orleans (2-3) How can you hold Adrian Peterson to 32 yards on 18 carries and still lose?
19   Arizona (3-2) They're the best team in the worst division in football....by far....on both counts.
20   New York Jets (2-2) I have to admit, Brett Favre is playing a lot better football than I thought he would in a new system.
21   Atlanta (3-2) With that running game, this very well could be the Cinderella team of the year.
22   Green Bay (2-3) For a defense with all that talent, giving up almost 26 points and 363 yards a game must be disappointing to say the least.
23   Miami (2-2) Ronnie Brown is more valuable to his team than any other player in the league right now.
24   San Francisco (2-3) They're here because they have two wins, but they came against teams that are a combined 1-7. Unless they get it going, they'll be dropping soon.
25   Cleveland (1-3) For Romeo Crennel's sake, I hope the Browns were able to get their act straight over the bye week.
26   Houston (0-4) That was one of the best games I've ever seen this team play....until Sage Rosenfels tried to do too much.
27   Oakland (1-3) Welcome to the Tom Cable Era, Raiders' fans!!!
28   Seattle (1-3) If Matt Hasselbeck's injury is a lingering one, they might be looking at a top-five draft pick.
29   Kansas City (1-4) After soundly beating Denver, did you expect anything but a letdown in Carolina?
30   Detroit (0-4) The Lions are losing by an average of 21 points per game. No, that's not a misprint.
31   Cincinnati (0-5) I understand the poor defense, but I just can't believe how unimpressive the offense has been.
32   St. Louis (0-4) The Rams next three games are against Washington, Dallas, and New England. Yikes!!!
