2008 Week Eight Power Rankings

You'll probably notice that teams 19 through 24 didn't change even though all of them but Minnesota won last weekend. Before the fans of those team fill up my email inbox with hate mail, l want you to know that almost every one of them has been an incredibly inconsistent team this year and I'm simply having a hard time getting a read on them. Obviously, as the season plays out, I'll get a better idea of who are the contenders and who are the pretenders. In the meantime, enjoy the rankings, and feel free to blast me in email form.

1   Tennessee (7-0) It's going to be hard for anyone to beat this team with Kerry Collins playing as confidently as he is.
2   New York Giants (6-1) They're 6-1 and I don't know if they've played they're best yet.
3   Washington (6-2) They keep winning, but none of them has been impressive. I'm worried that they might be a tad overrated.
4   Pittsburgh (5-2) I sure hope the Steelers found a competent long snapper this week.
5   Philadelphia (4-3) If the Eagles can stay relatively healthy, they'll go deep in the playoffs.
6   Carolina (6-2) Jake Delhomme is making a strong push for Comeback Player of the Year.
7   Tampa Bay (5-3) You don't fall many spots when barely lose to a good team on the road.
8   New England (5-2) Simply put, Matt Cassel has to play better or the Pats are in serious trouble in a much improved division.
9   Dallas (5-3) Now that's the Cowboys' defense I was expecting to see all year.
10   Buffalo (5-2) You simply can't turn the ball over four times on the road and expect to win in the NFL.
11   Denver (4-3) They only moved up in their bye week because a few of the teams below looked terrible.
12   Indianapolis (3-4) I keep waiting for Peyton Manning and the rest of the offense to turn it around. Now I'm wondering whether this will be as good as they get in 2008.
13

Jacksonville (3-4) Can someone please tell me how Maurice Jones-Drew and Fred Taylor only averaged 2.7 yards per carry against the Browns porous defense?
14   Chicago (4-3) I don't know how they managed it, but the Bears have two bye weeks in a row. That's right folks, they play Detroit this week.
15   San Diego (3-5) I've given up on this team. All that talent, and Norv Turner has no idea what to do with it.
16   Green Bay (4-3) They're next five games will decide their season: Tennessee, Minnesota, Chicago, New Orleans, and Carolina. That's a tough road to hoe.
17   Arizona (4-3) I have to admit, I too thought that Kurt Warner's better days were behind him.
18   Atlanta (4-3) His stat line wasn't great, but Matt Ryan impressed me last week. Against a tough defense, he kept his composure and made some very tough throws.
19   Minnesota (3-4) In a league of two-back systems, Adrian Peterson and LaDainian Tomlinson may be the only 25-carry-per-game backs left in the game.
20   Baltimore (4-3) Just like Kurt Warner, I thought Ray Lewis was done a couple of years ago. He's looking a lot more like the 2000 version than that of 2007.
21   New Orleans (4-4) I challenge anyone to tell me who's a better player than Drew Brees in the NFL right now.
22   Houston (3-4) Forget position, Andre Johnson is one of the top five players in the league.
23   New York Jets (4-3) After barely beating the Chiefs, even if I could move them up, I wouldn't.
24   Cleveland (3-4) Since the bye week, they're 2-1 in games against the Giants, Redskins, and Jaguars. But the difference is the defense.
25   Miami (3-4) I've never been a fan of Chad Pennington and his "pop-gun" arm, but he's doing a tremendous job for the Dolphins.
26   St. Louis (2-5) I actually moved them up one after losing, because they almost took out a third straight top-ten Power Rankings team. What a great job by Jim Haslett.
27   Seattle (2-5) Beating a 49ers' team in turmoil isn't much to brag about.
28   Oakland (2-5) The next coach of the Raiders is going to love the raw athleticism of this team. Unfortunately, he'll also have to deal with their undisciplined play.
29   San Francisco (2-6) Good for you, Mike Singletary. If only all coaches would stand up for what they believe in like you.
30   Kansas City (1-6) If I told you Tyler Thigpen would outplay Brett Favre last week, would you have even known who Tyler Thigpen was?
31   Cincinnati (0-8) After getting blown out in Houston, they're getting dangerously close to falling below the Lions.
32   Detroit (0-7) It was a valiant effort, but in the end, Dan Orlovsky is still their quarterback.
