Doctor's Notes: 10-27-08 through 11-2-08

There's an uproar over Mike Singletary sending Vernon Davis "to the showers" during the 49ers game against the Seahawks. Personally, I thought it was a great move. He's right, there's a decent amount of talent on that team and considering the division they're playing in, they should certainly be better than 2-6. San Francisco needs a shake-up. They need a guy who's going to come in there and ruffle some feathers. Mike Nolan, who is by all accounts a great guy and good football coach was too much of a "players' coach." Of course, the end result of this will be interesting to see, but this is the kind of thing that could be a catalyst for a better second half of the season. And by the way, don't think that the brass in the Bay area didn't know that this was coming. They knew exactly who they were getting and what was coming.

Obviously, the Cowboys win over Tampa Bay was a surprise to me. I thought that it would be difficult at best for them to pull out a game against a great defense with Brad Johnson at the helm. But, it was the defense that was the difference this time. Granted, the Bucs' offense isn't a juggernaut, but you could tell that Wade Phillips taking over the defensive calls had an effect. I don't think he made too many strategic changes, but I think a message was sent to a very high-priced unit that their recent performances would not be tolerated.

Break up the Texans! Seriously, Gary Kubiak has righted the ship. Since the first two games of the season, the Texans are 3-2 and could very easily be 5-0. The overtime loss to Jacksonville included David Garrard converting two fourth-and-longs and the Jags won the coin flip. Of course, it's been well documented that had Sage Rosenfels simply hung onto the ball, Houston would have beaten Indianapolis. However, the Texans now have the 4th rated offense overall and the defense is in the top half of the league. With unheralded Dunta Robinson getting healthier by the day, don't be surprised to see Houston make a push down the stretch in a very average AFC.

I'm beginning to wonder if the Redskins will ever win a game by double-digits. As good as they are, not a single one of their six wins has come by means of a winning margin of 10 or more. And this includes games the Browns and Lions. Just comething to keep in mind when putting down some Diet Cokes.

I was all ready to place the Giants at the top of the Power Rankings this week until last night's game. Granted, New York's win was against a stronger opponent on the road, but the Titans proved something to me last night. First of all, they came from behind to win a game. OK, OK, it was only eight points, but this team is not built to do that. And, with that defense, I don't think there will be too many times they're down by more than that. Second, Kerry Collins is proving that he's much more than a "caretaker" or "manager" of this offense. He made some great throws at key times in a game in which their vaunted running game had an off-night (31 carries for only 88 yards). Now, I'm not saying they're going to win it all or anything, but they are still the best team in football.
