The Water Cooler: 10/7/07 through 10/13/07

Sunday, Oct. 7th                                                                                                                                                                          1. I don't usually cover college football on this site, but I certainly want to comment on the LSU-Florida game on Saturday. The last time a college football game lived up to the hype was the 2006 Rose Bowl. The quality of play, combined with the multitude of players who I will be covering within the next couple of years, made this a great game. I've always felt that Les Miles was more of a great recruiter/bad strategy coach, but the gutsy decisions he made on Saturday have made me rethink my position. As the year progresses, I'll make sure to pay attention.

2. Alge Crumpler seemed to be pointing the finger at his head coach when he was talking about the Falcons being the worst offense in the NFL once they cross the fifty. Bobby Petrino, known in college for being an offensive genius, has found the professional ranks a bit more difficult. What's worse for him is that his benching of Joey Harrington so early in the game, a game that was very close, was a strange move to say the least, and one that irked quite a few of his players. After watching a very ill-prepared Byron Leftwich try to navigate the offense, I can definitely see why.

3. Outside of a playoff game-winning field goal, I can't imagine a better game for a kicker that Kris Brown performance agains the Dolphins. He kicked five field goals of 20, 43, 54, 54, and a 57-yarder with only one second left to win the game 22-19.

4. First of all, I'm glad to see that both Trent Green and Travis Johnson are alright after the violent collision between them in the Miami-Houston game. Second, I have a hard time with all of the "Joe Buck-wannabes" that are tearing Johnson apart for his "taunting" of Green after the quarterback's low block almost took out the defensive tackles' knees. Johnson had a right to be angry - it appeared to be a cheap shot/borderline illegal block to me.

5. With David Carr at quarterback, Carolina will only go as far as Steve Smith and the defense can take them. I don't like their chances.

6. Now that's the LaDainian Tomlinson and San Diego Chargers we've come to know and love!!!

7. If you ever find yourself down about your favorite team, or not happy about the coaches' play-calling, just think about the poor saps who had to sit and watch the Ravens' 9-7 win over the 49ers. Talk about odd, it's easy to understand how San Francisco only managed a touchdown on 163 total yards and six first downs, but how does Baltimore only manage three field goals with 315 and 19?

8. I guess the Steelers have rebounded from that loss in the desert, no.

9. Good Brett, Packers win. Bad Brett, Packers lose. It's as easy as that. Seriously though, Chicago may have saved it's season with that 34 yard touchdown pass from Brian Griese to Desmond Clark.

Monday, Oct. 8th                                                                                                                                                                          1. I've talked to a couple of ex-players over the past 24 hours about the Trent Green-Travis Johnson incident. Needless to say, both of them said they would not have reacted in the same way that Johnson did, but both of them thought that Green's hit was "cheap" and "ill-advised." First, both of them had been in similar situations, and believe that the league has to look at low blocking on "reverse" or "change of possession plays. Second, one of them was surprised that Green put himself in that situation. Knowing his history of concussions, making any block at all on a 300 pound lineman was "dumb" and "he should have just gotten out of the way."

2. I just finished watching a rookie kicker named Nick Folk ruin Buffalo's first Monday Night Football appearance in 13 years. With the Bills' history, especially when involving the Cowboys, you could see that almost every fan in Ralph Wilson Stadium saw this coming when Dick Jauron, Trent Edwards, and company couldn't manage to put more than 24 points on the board. Especially when you consider that Tony Romo turned the ball over six times by himself.

3. Oh, and by the way Tony, you may want to be a little more "with it" next week. Supposedly, there's some guy named Belichick coming to town who just loves to take advantage of quarterbacks who don't take care of the ball.

Tuesday, Sept. 25th                                                                                                                                                                    1. Matt Leinhart just found out what happens when you anger the football gods with selfish statements about wanting to be the starter regardless of what might be best for the team. Yep, his broken collarbone, suffered against the Rams on Sunday, landed him on injured reserve today.

2. I was surprised to hear that Travis Johnson will not be fined by the NFL for his hit on Trent Green. According to Gene Washington, the NFL's Director of Football Operations, Johnson was simply "upset about what he thought was an illegal block." He said that the penalty was issued correctly, but there was no need for further action against Houston's defensive tackle. Personally, I think his opinion falls in line with that of most players: " I would have been pretty ticked at him too."
