1/13/08
through 1/19/08 Sunday, January 13th After watching this weekend's games, I couldn't help but think about the futures of two head coaches: Tony Dungy and Mike Holmgren. In the case of Dungy, I can almost guarantee that he has coached his last game in Indianapolis. First of all, he wanted to retire last year, but came back as a favor to Jim Irsay and Bill Polian. Second, the most important things in his life are family and faith. His children recently were enrolled in a Tampa school, and unlike some coaches, I can't see him playing the "commuter-coach" at this stage of his career. In addition, he's always wanted to enter the ministry, specifically dealing with reforming inmates. Lastly, his son's suicide a couple of years ago hit him hard, and personally, I think he still feels as though his coaching responsibilities may have interfered. With Holmgren, I'm about 75% sure he'll come back. I just can't see him walking away. At least, not while he has unfinished business. Of course, that being bringing a championship to Seattle. The Seahawks' coach has always been driven by ego and he desperately wants to get into the Hall of Fame and measure up to his mentor, Bill Walsh. Monday, January 14th I've been asked several times today about my reaction to Terrell Owens' tearful outburst at yesterday's post-game press conference. Call me emotionally void, but I'm not buying it. This guy has traditionally thrown his quarterbacks under the proverbial bus without reason. Obviously, he was upset about the loss, but I think he wants to somewhat cover up the fact that he was the one who purchased the trip for Tony Romo and Jessica Simpson. Remember, it took a couple of weeks before he criticized Donovan McNabb after Super Bowl XXXIX. Let's give it some time. Tuesday, January 15th Norv Turner received the best news he could have hoped for today (well, outside of getting to play Jacksonville instead of New England). It looks like both LaDainian Tomlinson and Philip Rivers are expected to play in the AFC Championship game. He'll have to wait until later in the week to find out the status of Antonio Gates. Wednesday, January 16th The more I think about it, as much as I wanted to see a Colts-Patriots AFC Championship game, I'm happy to see the Chargers for two reasons: LaDainian Tomlinson and Norv Turner. For Tomlinson, he's been the nest player in football for the past three years, and hasn't seen playoff success. Moreover, Turner has been the butt of many coaching jokes throughout the years. However, he's never shown bitterness towards the media or fans. The job he's done this year, after a 1-3 start, has been masterful. He's instilled a toughness in this team that it's never had, and they're peaking at the right time, instead of in week 10. Thursday, January 17th Well, that screeching halt you just heard, that's the Chargers bandwagon. Philip Rivers was downgraded to doubtful. Yes, that's right Charger-fans, you're prayers have been answered, IT'S BILLY VOLEK TIME!!! Seriously, to this point, and primarily because of the kind of pressure San Diego's defense could put on Brady and Co., I was thinking about taking the Bolts and the points, but this pretty much destroys that idea.
